What Speed

What Speed - am I doing? This app is designed to tell you how fast you are going, what direction, and your altitude.

Cost: Completely free to download and use - you can optionally chip in via in-app support if you’d like to support ongoing development.

What Speed shows live GPS speed, altitude, and recent movement in one clean layout - so you can focus on how fast you’re moving and how it changes over time. Pick your average (instant speed or a rolling average over the last few seconds or up to a minute), glance at min and max over the last minute, and use speed and altitude charts when you want the bigger picture.

What you can see and control
• Live speed from GPS, with optional 3s–60s rolling averages as your main readout
• Min / max speed over the last minute next to your primary speed
• Optional panels with multiple average windows at once (show or hide when you want less clutter)
• Speed-over-time and altitude-over-time charts, with a configurable range (1 min to 1 hour of history on the timeline)
• Heading display (compass-style) when you want direction at a glance
• Metric or imperial: km/h or mph
• Pause to freeze readings and charts, clear to reset stored samples for a fresh session
• Keep screen awake while you’re using the app (optional)
• Appearance: follow the system, or light / dark
• Averages that ignore standstill (optional) - useful if you only care about moving time

Settings
Choose how averages work, how long charts cover, whether speed and altitude history is saved between launches, and which readout is front and center. Send feedback from the app if you have ideas or run into issues; support options are there if you’d like to help keep development going. Completely optional!

Location
What Speed needs location access (and GPS-capable hardware) to compute speed and altitude. It’s built for cycling, running, driving, and other outdoor movement - not for turn-by-turn navigation. It does not run in the background if you close the app.

A small, focused instrument for “what speed am I doing right now - and how is it changing?” without the noise of a full fitness or navigation suite. It is great at confirming what speed you are actually doing compared to what your speedometer suggests you are doing (car manufacturers especially appear to overestimate how fast you are going!)
