MiG: Practice Russian!

миг means a blink, an instant. small sessions, a little at a time, until the russian starts to feel familiar.

mig is a quiet practice app for english speakers learning russian. it comes with 1,431 words and phrases across 28 themed sets, from first greetings to abstract concepts. bring your own sets too, from a csv or json file.

read the set at speed, one word at a time, paired with english or russian only. from a slow crawl to 300 words a minute. rotate to landscape for focus mode, where everything but the word disappears.

повторяй · repeat aloud
say each word out loud and mig scores how close you got. it runs hands free: mig says the word, the mic opens by itself, and your answer sends itself when you stop talking. it grades sound rather than spelling, so «нравиться» and «нравится» are judged the way a russian ear hears them, not the way a dictionary spells them. recognition happens on your device and nothing is sent anywhere.

the mode you do not look at. mig reads the set aloud, each word in english and then russian, as many times over as you ask, and loops until you stop it. it keeps playing with the screen off and takes the lock screen controls, so a set can run while you walk, cook or commute.

every word in mig's own sets is a recording rather than a synthesized guess, read by eight different speakers. the stress falls where it should, which a phone's built-in voice cannot promise. pick one speaker or let them rotate.

mig remembers your place in every mode, so a set you left half finished on the train is waiting where you stopped. it also remembers which words you have got right, which is how только новые works: practice only what you have not learned yet.

бортжурнал, the logbook, is a dated record of what you actually practiced: which sets, which modes, how long, and which words you met or moved to known. it is a record, not a score. no progress rings, no points, no grade.

a слово дня widget puts a word on your home screen, with a sentence of the day on the medium size. one daily reminder, off until you ask for it, skips the days you already practiced.

no accounts. no tracking. no analytics. no ads. your sets, your recordings and your progress stay on your phone, and mig works with no connection at all.

a note on the audio: words you import yourself are spoken by your phone's own voice, which does not always land the stress correctly, so trust the written mark over the voice there. and romanization is a reading aid to lean on early, then let fall away as the cyrillic grows comfortable.
