This app displays an animation of a candle as might have been rendered on an 8-bit Apple desktop computer from the early 1980's.

At that time, before widespread adoption of LCD and other flat-panel technology for computer displays, consumer-grade computer displays used cathode ray tube (CRT) technology -- and displays were often monochrome -- for instance, rendering only in the color green, or the color amber, or in black and white.

The Apple ][ personal computer was notable at the time of its launch for its support for color output.

The original Apple ][ "CANDLE" program was written in AppleSoft BASIC, and consisted of a series of HPLOTS -- "hi-res" lines, drawn on a coordinate plane.

The app attempts to reproduce the look and feel of the original "CANDLE" program as it would have been rendered on Apple ][ displays of the time, with options to render as if displayed on a green-screen or amber color display, or, as the program might have appeared when displayed on a color monitor, with a simulation of the NTSC artifacts which might have caused some of what would have been intended to be vertical white lines to be variously visibly tinged with the colors green and purple.

How to use:

Click on the CANDLE title to view the candle animation.

Click on the { Amber | Color | Green } button to alter the rendering of the display to simulate the output of amber, color, and green screen Apple ][ computer displays in use at the time of the writing of the original "CANDLE" program.
